What Is Mentoring?

Mentoring is a supportive professional relationship where Mentors share insight, perspective, and experience to support a mentee to explore goals, build confidence, and develop understanding.

Effective mentoring:

• Encourages reflection and self-directed learning.
• Focuses on guidance rather than advice‑giving or instruction.
• Supports mentees to make their own informed decisions.
• Maintains clear professional boundaries.

All mentoring relationships are:

• Professional, respectful, and time‑bound.
• Focused on career development and employability.
• Developmental rather than directive, (e.g. mentors ask reflective questions rather than telling students what role to apply for).
• Reciprocal, with learning for both mentor and mentee.

Mentor Connect is not about recruitment, counselling or academic advising. Mentees come prepared to ask questions, listen and learn. The Mentor’s role is to guide, question, and share perspectives and experience.

Benefits for Mentees

• Clarify career interests and realistic next steps
• Gain insight into industries, roles, and workplace culture
• Build confidence in professional conversations
• Develop communication and networking skills
• Connect academic learning to real‑world practice
• Learn directly from experienced professionals
• Expand professional networks

Benefits for Mentors?

• Share professional knowledge and real‑world insight
• Refine mentoring, coaching and communication skills
• Reflect on professional practice
• Contribute meaningfully to student confidence and employability
• Be inspired by emerging talent and fresh perspectives
• Potential credit toward Continuing Professional Development hours
